In Loving Memory of Maxine Deutsch

Maxine Deutsch, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and the undeniable backbone of her family, passed away last night. She faced every challenge with the same qualities she brought to all the parts of her life: grit, grace, and just the right amount of stubbornness.

Born and raised with a sharp mind and a strong sense of purpose, Maxine married her Fair Lawn High School sweetheart, Murray, beginning a 61-year love story filled with laughter, loyalty, and a lifelong partnership.

Deeply committed to her community, Maxine was a founding member of Temple Beth Rishon in Wyckoff, New Jersey. She poured her heart and time into helping shape a place that would become a spiritual home not only for her own family but for future generations.

A master multitasker, Maxine balanced raising three children Emily Shiller, Ken Deutsch, and Gregg Deutsch while keeping the household running smoothly. Her son-in-law, Stephen Shiller, and daughter-in-law, Zizette Deutsch, were later folded into the family, where Maxine welcomed them with open arms.

Maxine was a cherished and loving supporter, enthusiastic cheerleader, and gentle enforcer of manners. She is a “great” grandmother to seven grandchildren, all of whom adored her: Matthew Shiller (and his wife, Courtney Stephens Shiller), Samantha Shiller, Sam Deutsch, Zachary Deutsch, Maya Deutsch, Alexis Deutsch, Jack Deutsch. Her sister, Barbara Levey, predeceased her.

In her final years, Maxine embodied the same spirit she carried throughout her life. She met every challenge with courage, humor, and an unwavering love for her family. Even in the hardest moments, she reminded everyone how to face life with grace, always offering her trademark reassurance: “I’m fine”.

She will be remembered for her warmth, her wit, her impeccable organization, and her deep devotion to the people she loved. Her legacy lives on in her family, in the traditions she created, and in the countless small ways she made life brighter for everyone around her.

May her memory be a blessing, a comfort, and an example of a life well lived with heart and determination.

In lieu of flowers, Maxine’s family kindly asks that donations be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where Maxine received exceptional care.

Maxine and Murray's daughter, Emily Shiller, wrote in notifyong us:

Sadly, my mom, Maxine, passed 2 weeks after dad. They were inseparable in life and obviously couldn't be without one another.

I am so heartbroken to hear about Maxine, we were very close friends all through school. We were also at each others weddings. I will always remember and cherish the beautiful memories I have of Maxine and Murray.

My heartfelt condolences for the family of Maxine & Murray💕.  I met Maxine at Lincoln Memorial Camp in Blairstown, NJ at tender age of 11years old.  A sleep away summer camp with bunk cabins & meals in a large building.  We enjoyed many wonderful activities including swimming, canoeing, hiking, picnics & dancing.  We became instant friends including Eileen Reisman.  When I went back to school that same year we were all reunited to my delight!  Remaining friends until high school graduation.  It was always exciting to see Maxine & Murray at the class of 1961 fun reunions.  Memories are the legacy of a well lived life so RIP💗.

Overcome with sadness to hear of Maxine and Murray's passing. Two upstanding people.

I met both of them when I moved to Fair Lawn when I was 14 years old.

Many high school memories and reunions to think back on with delight.

To their beautiful family I send my condolences with love,

Marci Solomon
