Phillip Richard Apffel: Rick passed away peacefully Aug. 13, 2010 after an extended illness. He was born Oct. 21, 1943 in Paterson, NJ. After 2 years in the Army he married his college sweetheart and moved to New Orleans, where he was a commercial diver. Later he taught high school science, and as an avid tennis player won many tournaments. He and his wife Jeanne moved to Tacoma in 1990 to enjoy outdoor activities; mushroom collecting, birding, kite flying, kayaking and skiing. Survived by his wife of 41 years, his mother Claire Apffel, his sister, Barbara Pierce (Jerry), his brother Keith Apffel, along with extended family. At Rick's request, there will be no memorial service, but remembrances may be made to your local Hospice.
