Ruth Gerstein (Sereque)

Ruth SEREQUE Ruth Sereque died suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday, March 13 after a short, acute illness. She was born in Paterson, New Jersey March 17, 1944 and attended the Manhattan School of Music, where she was a violin student of Raphael Bronstein. She met her husband while they were both musicians with the North Carolina Symphony, and she went on to be a violinist with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional del Peru and Assistant Concertmaster of the Ft Wayne Philharmonic. Upon moving to Seattle in 1979, she became violist with the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, and Seattle Baroque. In April 2002 she performed Bruch's Concerto for Clarinetand Viola with her husband Chris and Philharmonia Northwest, Roupen Shakarian conducting. She was a frequent attendee of Queen Anne garage and estate sales and amassed a huge collection of vintage black women's concert wear. She was a long-time vegetarian and recycled before anyone knew what recycling was. Ruth and her husband jogged in Queen Anne and enjoyed hiking in the Cascades and Olympics. She was a long time practitioner of yoga and will be remembered for her sharp wit, generosity,and honesty. She is survived by her sister Isa Shemwell of Sydney, Australia, brother Marc Gerstein of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and husband Chris Sereque of Seattle.

Ilene Rich (Holtzberg)

 Ruth was a good friend of mine in elementary school. I remember she played the violin and she apparently achieved her goals. I was sad to learn of her passing. Ilene Rich
