Elaine Codling (Burns)

Elaine Codling (Burns)

(November 8, 1942 – June 21, 2023)

BURNS, Elaine V. (nee Codling), 80 of Fair Lawn passed away peacefully on June 21, 2023. Born in Croydon, England to Edward and Vera Codling. Elaine and her family moved to the United States when she was 14 years old. They came over on the SS United States and settled in the Radburn section of Fair Lawn. They moved in next to the Burns family where she met, fell in love and married the boy next door. William and Elaine were married for 56 years before William passed away last year. Elaine worked for The Shopper News, as a typist in the Editorial Department for 35 years before retiring in 2006. She was an active member of The Happy Seniors and both her and her husband were Trip Coordinators for several years.

Her hands were rarely still as Elaine was a very talented crocheter. She used to sew clothes for her two daughters as well as make doll clothes, baby blankets, baby bonnets and sweaters. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles and completed them in the newspapers daily. She loved spoiling her grandchildren with sweets and treats and would often slip them some money whenever they were around. On any given Saturday morning you could hear Elvis Presley blaring from the house. Needless to say she was a big fan of Queen Elizabeth and The Royal Family and spent hours and hours watching the recent Coronation of King Charles III.

Elaine is predeceased by her husband William (2022) and her son in law George (2018).

She is survived by her two daughters, Teresa Kelly and John of Wayne, NJ and Linda Orth of Fair Lawn, NJ. Her five grandchildren Billy (22), Jimmy (20), Johnny (18) and her twin granddaughters Samantha and Leah (7). She is also survived by her brother Barry and his wife Sue of TN, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Sunday, June 25th from 1pm to 4pm at Vander Plaat Colonial Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ with a service immediately following at 4pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fair Lawn Food Pantry. Visit https://www.fairlawn.org/helpourpantry to donate. For further service information go to www.vpfairlawn.com.

I am so saddened to hear of Elaine's passing.  I counted her as a cherished friend through high school and in years past.  Rest in peace.  I will always remember you as a beautiful soul that I had the privilege of knowing 💔
